NELSON and GLYPH OWENSON came together a year ago to form KiP KEiNO. However this is not the first time their paths have crossed. Read on:
In the early eighties Nelson and Glyph were both frontmen with dissonant, diagonal post-punk bands: Nelson with THREE TIMES A DAY and Glyph with THE REASONABLE STROLLERS. Both bands played frequently in the popular London clubs of the time, occasionally on the same bill. The communal delight they shared in probing the darkest most extreme recesses of the musical armpit has forged a lasting bond.
"Sometimes I find it hard to tell whether it's you or me on the end of this sharp stick." THREE TIMES A DAY released the 7 inch single 'I crave to be an hermaphrodite' (Abstract Records) shortly after THE REASONABLE STROLLERS released 'Tools for Africa' (Robust Process Records) which were both played on JOHN PEEL's very popular evening slot on Radio One. It's fair to say that the two bands influenced each other. Nelson is also the current bassist with alternative rock group 'NEW MODEL ARMY' ( www.newmodelarmy.org ). He joined them in January 1990 which makes him their longest serving bass player.
Although not at the same time, Nelson and Glyph were both members of the garage-folk combo 'The CHURCHFITTERS' who have since become huge in France. Glyph played his mandolin and sang like acid rain in a birdbath, as did Nelson, who also played a cricket bat bass that once belonged to Harry Sobers and a snare. The CHURCHFITTERS played to full clubs and pubs all over parts of Europe.
Glyph started playing music on a blue plastic clarinet at the age of eight. He moved on to harmonica after the clarinet melted. His first guitar was an autographed plastic Beatles 6-string from F.W.Woolworth.
It was on his twelfth birthday that Nelson began his swim through the murky musical lake when his parents bought him a £7 nylon guitar with two decorative stick-on Union jacks and a strap similar to the Glam rocker Marc Bolan's. KiP KEiNO isn't the first group that Glyph and Nelson have collaborated in - Nelson played drums and Glyph played electric guitar and sang lead vocals with 'PSYCHO CIRCUS' along with Pig Brown (who later joined 'SALAD') and the late Steve Bywater (a.k.a. 'PRODDER' who until recently played with SANDY DILLON ). PSYCHO CIRCUS played all the credible venues in and around London. They supported groups such as: NICK CAVE and the BADSEEDS; KILLING JOKE and THE SCIENTISTS among others. KING BAAH occasionally joined them on stage wearing nothing but a nappy while furiously beating a corrugated steel sheet with his extended rod. Nelson bumped into ADAM ANT, and his two extremely tough bodyguards, in the gent's toilet after a gig at the then famous Wah Club in London. The dandy highwayman told Nelson that he found PSYCHO CIRCUS to be very entertaining . . . a compliment indeed from such a magnificent performer.
So - I bet you're wondering about the other geezer who appears in some of the photos, well this is how the story goes: Glyph knows a man who tries to get people to dance properly by shouting down a microphone at them and he has a son who bangs drums with a bunch of noisy chaps from Suffolk called DEAD LANE CROSS . This son owned and liked the Fruit Flies… CD and heard we were looking for a drummer/percussionist. He said that we can call him what we like as long as it's Buzz or Barney. We all met up in a museum in Suffolk where we unleashed our instruments and made sweet twisted music together. Then, Musketeer like, all 3 of us said 'One three all and all three one' or 'I reckon this'll work, don't you?' Some other Buzz bands: THE APOLOGIES; EVIL GENIUS; SATAN'S LOVE CHILD; VESSEL; DEAD LANE CROSS. Nelson has also had some success as a record producer. He has recorded and produced 2 Albums and 2 EP CD's for the artist MARTIN NEWELL ( www.martinnewell.co.uk ). These CD's entitled 'THE SPIRITCAGE' and the more recent 'RADIO AUTUMN ATTIC' are available from the Cherry Red Record label and all good record shops. Nelson dealt with all the drums and percussion matters and also guested on mandolin, double bass, bongos and violin on some of the tracks.
During his time with pioneering synth band ZORCH, Glyph played at such landmark events as Stonehenge and the Windsor free festival. ZORCH member 'Gwyo Ze Pix' later joined the psychedelic tripsters 'GONG'. Glyph and Steve Kettley were founder members of ALAS POOR BRUIN, those princes of free improvisation. Kettley is currently in the groundbreaking CAULD BLAST ORCHESTRA and the hugely entertaining SALSA CELTICA.
More curious facts about KiP KEiNO: Glyph painted a block of flats in Twickenham. Nelson's granddad painted 'Jumbo the watertower' in Colchester.
While with the BROTHERHOOD OF LIZARDS, Nelson and fellow band member Martin Newell promoted their album 'Lizardland' (Deltic Records) by doing the first ever green rock tour. The two vegetarians achieved this by travelling between venues by bicycle, carrying all their equipment in panniers and rucksacks.
Glyph is also a keen cyclist and in the past toured around Europe for an entire year by bicycle, busking with a tin whistle on route, as a means to buy food and wine.
While Nelson was beating about his drum set with THE HIDING PLACE they shared their manager Steve Brown with dusty spaghetti metal stars FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM. Consequently they supported the Goth cowboys on tour many times and a few years later Nelson met up with THE NEPHILIM again, as they were the support act for NEW MODEL ARMY when they gigged around Europe and most parts of Wales.
